Garden Route Destinations

Mossel Bay

The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Botswana’s most iconic safari destinations, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. This vast inland delta, formed by the Okavango River, creates a lush oasis in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, offering a unique ecosystem of waterways, islands, and floodplains. Visitors can explore its beauty through mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris, game drives, and walking safaris, each providing intimate encounters with the region’s diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and a dazzling bird species. The Delta is at its fullest from June to September, attracting wildlife from across the region and making it an ideal time for safari. Its blend of serene waterways, dramatic sunsets, and rich biodiversity offers an unparalleled wilderness experience, perfect for adventure and relaxation alike.

Wilderness

A tranquil escape along the Garden Route, Wilderness is a paradise for nature lovers, offering pristine beaches, lush forests, and meandering waterways. The town sits between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, providing endless opportunities for outdoor activities. The Touw River Estuary is perfect for canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding, while the Map of Africa viewpoint offers one of the region’s most breathtaking panoramic vistas. Birdwatchers will be in their element, with over 230 species in the area, including the iconic African fish eagle. Hiking trails such as the Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail lead through ancient forests to hidden waterfalls, immersing visitors in the Wilderness’s untouched natural beauty. Wilderness Beach offers long stretches of unspoiled sand for those looking to unwind, which is ideal for sunset strolls. Whether seeking adventure or relaxation, Wilderness delivers a peaceful yet exhilarating Garden Route experience.

Knysna

Knysna is one of the most picturesque stops along the Garden Route, famed for its turquoise lagoon, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and world-renowned oysters. The town’s centrepiece is the Knysna Lagoon, best explored by boat, offering stunning views of the Knysna Heads—two towering cliffs guarding the entrance to the sea. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and sunset cruises on the lagoon. The surrounding Knysna Forest, once home to roaming elephants, offers excellent hiking and mountain biking trails. Food lovers flock to Knysna for its famous oyster culture, celebrated annually at the Knysna Oyster Festival. For a unique experience, a visit to the Featherbed Nature Reserve allows visitors to explore coastal caves, hidden beaches, and scenic viewpoints. Whether indulging in gourmet seafood, exploring nature reserves, or simply soaking in the town’s laid-back charm, Knysna is a must-visit destination on the Garden Route.

One of Plett’s biggest draws is its incredible marine wildlife, with opportunities to see whales, dolphins, and seals on ocean safaris. The nearby Robberg Nature Reserve is a hiking hotspot boasting spectacular coastal trails, dramatic cliffs, and views of seal colonies basking on the rocks. For wildlife conservation interests, Monkeyland and Birds of Eden provide a chance to observe rescued primates and exotic birds in free-roaming sanctuaries.
