Picture the scene – an evening game drive; you stop for a sundowner hand in hand with your partner, your favourite drink in the other, the golden sun setting over the open savannah plains, an acacia tree in the background and the silhouette of a lone giraffe strolling past. A most romantic panorama amplified by the sound of Nature; hippos groaning, birds tweeting and monkeys playing cheekily around you. A beautiful way to start what will be beautiful marriage.

An African safari is a cherished experience and can be made even more intimate with private game drives and secluded plunge pools offering un-interrupted views of nature and wildlife.

Beach and bush honeymoon

The beach and bush honeymoon combines the nature and wildlife experience of Africa with the picturesque beaches. There are over 18,000 miles (30,000 km) of coastline in Africa many of those miles harbor the most pristine beaches in the world from the Seychelles to South Africa, the Mauritius to Madagascar, Mozambique to Malawi.

With an innumerable array of spectacular beaches and so many possible destinations to consider deciding where to go can be difficult. Do you opt for the rugged splendor of South Africa’s Wild Coast or the paradise islands of the Seychelles and Mauritius or one of the magnificent beaches in-between.

This question of ‘which beach?’ can be answered by the choice of safari destination. If you wish to go to Tanzania for your safari, Zanzibar would be the logical choice. If you were to go to a Kruger Private Game Reserve for your safari you could select one or more of South Africa’s incredible beaches to explore. West Africa can’t be ignored, located off the coast of Senegal, Cape Verde comprises 10 volcanic islands with wild, untamed beaches. Decisions, decisions…

With so many options, it can be overwhelming to make a decision. However, we are experts in travel to Africa and can help you make this decision based on what you want from your beach and bush honeymoon experience.

When is the best time to go on a honeymoon in Africa?

Africa is a huge continent, and luckily this means that at any time of the year there is somewhere exceptional to visit.

East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda) is at its best in their winter months of mid-June to October when the parks are dry, the weather sunny and the wildlife excellent. The peak wildlife season in Southern Africa is actually fairly similar with the best months being from May through until the end of October.

The off-season is also a good time to visit Africa. Prices tend to be cheaper and there are fewer tourists. Furthermore, if you are hoping to see new-born animals on safari then the green season is an optimal time to go. When you go really depends on what you want to see and do. But, rest assured there is never a bad time to visit Africa.

How much does an Africa honeymoon cost?

Africa offers a wide range of accommodation options of various styles, so to some degree an itinerary can be crafted to fit your budget whatever it may be – although of course the bigger your budget the more options you will have.

The most expensive element of an African honeymoon is normally the safari part; a night on safari is much more expensive than a night at a beach or in a city or at Vic Falls. Therefore it’s a matter of balancing your time and budget between safari and other destinations in the way that works best for you.

We can help design your itinerary around your budget.

Hints & tips to planning your honeymoon

When it comes to planning your honeymoon – the biggest trip you’ve ever been on with your favorite person in the world – it’s hard not to feel the pressure to make it absolutely perfect! Chances are you encountered (a lot of) stress during your wedding planning and the last thing you need is to anxiety about your honeymoon. So leave the pressure behind, take your time, figure out what you really want to do and make your honeymoon your dream holiday.

To help ease whatever pressure you have to deliver a dream honeymoon we have compiled a host of tips to help plan your romantic getaway.

Consider adding optional extras – for very special memories

To create special memories you need to create special moments. This could be a variety of things if you have always fancied a skydive or bungee jump make this the occasion to do it. Imagine sky diving in Cape Town or bungee jumping off Victoria Falls Bridge.

Your special moment doesn’t have to be adventure focused. To sleep under the stars out somewhere in the wilds of Africa, with only a mosquito net between you and the canopy of stars is to live through one of the most romantic experiences.

There are many ways to create special moments in Africa, it doesn’t have to be extravagant. Take the best seat at a restaurant, bring a bottle of champagne to the beach and enjoy the sunset. Make it memorable.

Don’t fit in too much, ensure you have time to enjoy the activities and relax

A hectic schedule may cause stress and anxiety – we are meant to be escaping stress, remember!

You may be a couple who love to be doing stuff all the time and have every hour planned out with a different activity but don’t forget to take a moment, embrace the activity. If you have a full day planned, every day, chances are you won’t take the time to fully immerse yourself in what you are doing. Downtime is good, don’t feel you have to be making the most of every minute. A walk along the beach can be just as remarkable as a scuba dive!

Schedule a surprise for your partner

You will undoubtedly work side by side when planning your honeymoon; destination, activities, flights, hotel, etc. which is great fun but why not try to add a surprise here and there, too! This could be anything from a couples massage to a hot air balloon ride over the savannah plains of the Maasai Mara.

Start early

It is never too early to start planning your honeymoon. Being prepared and planning six to eight months prior to your travel dates will ensure you have plenty of time to find the flights you want, book the accommodation and activities you’ve been dreaming of. By booking early you may also save some money. More champagne, please!

Make it new for both of you

Doing something for the first time with the person you love most in the world is a very special experience. Sharing that memory together having not lived it with someone else before, makes it extra special. If you don’t select a destination that is new for both of you be sure to include some activities in your itinerary that is new for you both.

If you are unsure where you want to go narrow your options by determining;

– What is our budget?
– How many days do we have available for the honeymoon?
– Do we have to travel nonstop or is it more about the destination?
– What are our interests?
– What climate do we want?
– Will it be peak season and what is going on with the country?

Answering these questions will help you figure out where to go, when to go, what to do and how much you can spend. Determining your budget will help answer all the other questions.

Remove the stress of planning and booking a honeymoon by using the services of a travel agent. You can use a website to create your honeymoon wedding registry and share it with wedding guests and instead of a traditional wedding gift they can contribute towards or buy items on the list. This can be anything from cable car tickets up Table Mountain to a helicopter ride over the Victoria Falls.
