Clement was born in the Korogwe District of Tanga in 1979 and has one of the most positive and courteous personalities that we have seen in a safari guide.
Clement attended primary school in Lwengera Darajani, and was prepped to continue onto secondary when finances took a turn for the worst and his family was not able to afford the school supplies, mattress, hoe (yes, hoe!), school uniforms and so on that were required for attendance. This meant that Clement had to forego that opportunity.
In Standard Four, Clement’s father passed away in a road accident and just one week later, he lost his mother to a stroke (or a broken heart). So before Clement had even reached into his teenage years, he was orphaned. He has four siblings, and the oldest sister took on the role of ‘mother’ to look after the brood for the challenging days ahead.
He began his working life after primary school as a farmer. The yield was good and Clement used his portion of profits to make his way to Arusha to visit his sister, who had moved here at that time. Unfortunately, Clement didn’t know exactly where his sister was, so he stayed with a friend and slept on a card board box on the floor while he saved for a mattress. By chance once day, he met his brother-in-law at a bus stop and was shortly after reunited with his sister.
Clement studied and with experience became a qualified mechanic, and soon after also sold cement on the side. Another tragedy struck when his sister passed away leaving her four children for him to raise.
Clement was known as an excellent driver, and started with buses and then moved onto heavy vehicles. He found work with Dik Dik Hotel as a truck driver and after gaining the trust and respect of his employers, he was offered the chance to take part in a course for Wildlife and Tour Guide studies. He worked loyally for that company for twelve years. Unfortunately, the day came when the company was sold and it was time for Clement to move on.
Luckily for Maasai Wanderings, Clement applied for a safari guide position with us – and the rest is history. Life has never been so good and he enjoys the company of his colleagues and employers. Clement’s favourite animal is the eland – shy and graceful – and he loves to visit the Serengeti and its endless opportunities for excellent wildlife viewing.
Clement met and married his wife Angelina at the young age of twenty years old, and together they looked after their nephews and nieces before having two beautiful children of their own. He has already started to build a house and can’t wait for the day it is finished so his family can be ‘home’.
